Description
Chromic acid is a strong oxidant that oxidizes polysaccharides in fungal cell walls to aldehydes. Tissues with small amounts of polysaccharides such as basement membrane and collagen will be over-oxidized and will not react with methenamine silver. Tissues with large amounts of polysaccharides such as fungal cell walls, glycogen, and mucin are not completely oxidized. Therefore, they will combine with methenamine silver producing the desired results with using staining methods such as the GMS
